Bay Area Moving and Storage Tips
Whether you’re moving out of your Bay Area apartment or planning a long-distance relocation, here are helpful, time-tested moving strategies.
1. Treat moving like a serious project – plan!
Before you start filling up boxes and calling licensed movers to get the job done, sit down with pen and paper (or computer word document), and do your pre-planning. Treat this project like you would treat a business project. Figure out your ideal schedule, calibrate your budget, and identify the “deliverables” that need to be moved from point A to point B.
2. Identify what could go wrong.
This is a hugely important step, so don’t skip it! Make a list of problems that could throw your project out of alignment. For instance:
- “My friend bails on me at the last minute”
- “The current leaseholder doesn’t move out in time.”
- Etc.
3. Develop contingency plans.
Think through the unpleasant possible scenarios you unearthed in step 2 and come up with contingency plans: what you’ll do, if things go wrong. Odds are, you won’t have to go to your contingencies. But just having them in your back pocket will make the move less stressful.
4. Lastly, be resourceful.
Once you understand your project’s parameters (the scope, schedule, and budget), as well as the principles that you want to govern the project, it’s time to get creative. For instance, perhaps, over the next month, you can shuttle one or two boxes a day from your current place to your new place on the way to work. Or find a moving company that also provides packing and storage services to help your move go even more smoothly.
