Packing and Moving Tips for Relocation

1. Find well-qualified, vetted, and licensed residential movers.

Do your due diligence and make sure that any company you hire is licensed, bonded and insured, and has a stellar reputation in the community. Don’t break the bank, but don’t choose the cheapest service, either. The consequences of choosing an incompetent mover can cost you a ton — for instance, what if an inexperienced mover drops your flat screen TV or a box of your wedding china set?

2. “When in doubt, throw it out.”

Purge your stuff and pare down to the essentials. Do you really need 20 coffee mugs? What about that box of miscellaneous cables that’s been sitting in your closet for a decade? Throw out what you can, recycle/donate what you can, and keep the essentials — this will make the packing and moving experience so much easier. If you have to question yourself on whether or not you will use it again, throw it out.

3. Keep a running checklist.
Don’t try to keep all your projects in your head. Create a written check checklist – or, ideally, a checklist on the computer you can track over time. You might find it useful to adopt some or all of the methodologies that David Allen (“Getting This Done”) suggests in his GTD System.
For instance, some projects you might track include:

• Setting up the utilities
• Cleaning and painting the new home
• Pest and burglar-proofing your home
• Installing essentials like a first aid kit, food, water and snacks
• Familiarizing your kids with the local neighborhood
• Finalizing any documents about your property

4. Lastly, unpack strategically.
If you’re like many people, you might get through a “rush” of unpacking but then leave the more challenging boxes and packages to linger in your kitchen or living room — still boxed! — for months. Make sure to finish unpacking!
