The holiday season is upon us and with it comes an abundance of joy. From playing with snow in your backyard (or Lake Tahoe) to buying gifts for Christmas to celebrating New Year’s Eve, there are many things to look forward to in the last couple weeks of December.
If you have a Christmas tree (and ample decor), you’re probably wondering what you’ll do with all of it once the holidays are over. Our Novato moving company shares some excellent ideas on how to recycle and repurpose your Christmas tree and decor.
You might even end up bringing joy to someone’s life along the way!
Our Bay Area Moving Company Offers 7 Ways to Recycle & Reuse Your Holiday Tree and Decor
- Create a bird feeder
There can be no better bird feeder than a living Christmas tree. Just plant it in your backyard or leave it standing as-is to attract many types of birds with the smell of cranberry, suet, popcorn strings, fruit in mesh bags, and stale bread. Don’t be surprised to find song sparrows, chickadees, and Cardinals enjoying themselves.
- Mulch without mold
Pine needles tend to decompose quickly, making them perfect to be used as moisture- and mold-free mulch. Try using them in your garden or donate to one of many tree recycling programs in your community.
- Create home for the fishes
Use cut up Christmas tree pieces and throw them in the pond to create a place for fish to hide beneath. Just be sure not to use trees that have been chemically treated or still have decorations (like tinsel) attached to them.
- Make the ‘purrfect’ cat tree
Make your cat a new playground by covering the large branches and trunk of the Christmas tree with carpet pieces. Anchor the trunk down, attach some rope pieces, and you’ve successfully made a new place for the fuzzball to play around.
- Make wooden coasters
Still got the stump of your tree lying around? Chop them up into 1/3 or 1/2 inch thick disks to have your very own nature coasters. We bet the guests will be asking some questions when you serve them tea or coffee on these.
- DIY air freshener
Crush pine needles and pour them into a fresh bowl of potpourri or store them inside of sachets to make a unique air freshener. Now, your room will smell like Christmas throughout the year.
- Utilize Bay Area storage services
Instead of buying and tossing your Christmas tree every year, opt for a “fake tree” and store it away for next year (decorations included)! If you live in a small house or apartment, and don’t have much storage space to go all-out with decor around the holidays, consider the services of a Bay Area moving and storage company.
